INTRODUCTION TO THE CHITO-RYU SYLLABUS
Every Chito Ryu student starts training as an implied 9th Kyu (White Belt). Subject to making satisfactory progress and attendance students will be invited by Sensei to undertake their first formal Kyu grading - in order to attain 8th Kyu (Yellow Belt) status.
Thereafter, gradings will be at Sensei's invitation, subject to satisfactory progress and class attendance.
Chito Ryu members are encouraged to think of the grading process as a lifelong journey, in which the individual seeks to excel as best he or she can. That journey is not competitive, nor should a student feel that he or she is being compared to peers. Charlottesville Yoseikan values each student as an individual and for his/her own unique abilities and talents.
- These requirements will be learned while karate-ka are in their current belt rank and will be expected on their new rank test.
- The practice of jujitsu (self-defense techniques) as well as tamishiwari (board breaking) will be practiced on a monthly basis for all kyu rank levels.
- The use of hip rotation in zenkutsu dachi will be utilized as a training exercise only.
- The use of JKA two arm blocks will be maintained as training exercises to build speed in the lower ranks only.
